The Rose Garden – Everything You Need to Know
The Rose Garden is of one of San Jose’s oldest neighborhoods. Several existing Victorian houses in the neighborhood date from the 1860s and 1870s, especially along Magnolia Street, Hester Street, and Hedding Street. The garden it is named for, the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden was founded in 1927 and is 5.5 acres full of thousands of rose bushes.
The Rose Garden district in San Jose owes its charming vibe to a diverse display of rose varieties in its namesake garden, plus tree-lined streets with and gorgeous Victorians are sprinkled all over the Rose Garden
Nearby – The Rose Garden is a part of San Jose and the northwest border of the Rose Garden is adjacent to the city of Santa Clara.
Fun Facts – The 1997 version of the movie “The Absent Minded Professor” was filmed in the Rose Garden at a home on University Avenue. There is also an Egyptian Museum in the Rose Garden called the Rosicrucian Museum. The museum has an Egyptian child mummy which was researched and scanned by Stanford University and it’s partners. In 2017, x-ray images of the mummy were released that provide a 3D visualization of the girl’s remains.
Academic Achievements – 60% of the residents in the Rose Garden have some college/associates degree or higher. The two high school in the Rose Garden is Abraham Lincoln High School and they have a 96% graduation rate. Their SAT scores average 1130 and their ACT scores average a 29. Source: Niche.com

Wine Tasting Rooms – J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines is on Lenzen in San Jose 1 mile south of the Alameda. The tasting room is open 7 days a week. Be sure to check the J.Lohr website for events and hours as they are closed on most holidays. J. Lohr has been making wine in the Bay Area since the 1960’s. Their vineyards are in Paso Robles, but this tasting room is here in Silicon Valley.
Festival and Events Calendar – For information about events and nearby festivals, the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy keeps a calendar of local events.
The Rose, White and Blue Parade is the largest 4th of July festival in San Jose. The Alameda Avenue in the Rose Garden has a long and rich history of parades. The 4th of July parade typically has over 100 vehicles in their parade and over 35,000 spectators.
Activities – Heritage Garden workdays, the Fun Run for Kids, Nature Education, the Water Festival for Rose Garden 5th Graders can all be found on the Guadalupe Conservancy website.
Weather – In the summer months it is rare to get above 85 degrees and the average is 70 degrees. In the winter time the average temperature is 56 degrees.
Farmers Market – There is a farmers market every Saturday year round. It is sponsored by the Shasta / Hanchett Park Neighborhood Association. The marked is 10 am to 2 pm and is on 577 Dana Street. For directions and information about becoming a vendor, check the West Coast Farmers Market website.
