Older homes offer the opportunity for creative solutions. This kitchen remodel in Willow Glen was true to form in that respect. From the custom cabinetry and solution-inspired details, what was once a very cramped, vintage kitchen, has been wonderfully transformed to suit the client’s needs.
“We started with an old and tired kitchen, circa 1928. It had the most inadequate storage imaginable and very little counter space. We were always banging into things or having to hold cabinet doors open with our heads. We wanted to open things up into one long room, widen the opening from dining room to kitchen, and create more open-space for gatherings – like our annual holiday party.” – Bernadette & Bryan
PEPPER’S SEAL OF APPROVAL
“We worked with Jim on our kitchen remodel project in November and December 2016. Jim was referred to us by the Tile & Stone professional we knew. He had a good price-point and his references were very honest. In addition, Jim is a dog-lover and Pepper took to him right away.
We had a general idea of what we wanted, and Jim took things back to the studs. He created a beautiful and workable new kitchen – brought everything to life in wood, tile, and granite. The dishwasher, the vent above the stove, and glass-faced cabinets are some of the little kitchen luxuries we were happy to add.
We particularly like bookcase on the back wall and the nook at the end of the counter, where we can sit and look out the windows or back door, it is so nice. And the storage – we have storage! What we have now is far superior to what we could have imagined in the old space and we love the quality of the cabinets.
One of our favorite things, something that you would never know is there until we flip the switch, is the lovely up-lighting above the wall-cabinets. It was a great solution to the type of challenge you can run into with an older home, and adds a special touch to the room after the sun goes down. Our cousin was here recently, he’s a world traveler, and he said, “this is beautiful, and I can’t wait to throw a party or cook a meal here!” It is really that kind of perfect space.
Jim has the right personality for this. It’s easy to talk to him. “Big Jim” as we called him, is good at laying out options and is someone who knows what to do to keep things moving along. All his contractors are very responsive, very professional, and respectful too. We found him to be a good-natured guy. He had his opinions and heard our opinions as well.
Jim is a good communicator and things were done on time. He is on top of everything and things flowed one contractor to the next. Working with Jim, everything was delivered as promised and all was cleaned up at the end of the day – even the backyard. Of course, living in our home while the work was done, it was a disruption, however, Jim kept things to a workable level because of the way he managed the job.
We have a couple of special occasions each year and a growing family. This is such a nice, open space for everyone to gather. It’s big enough for our friends, family, and neighbors to comfortably enjoy time together. We are definitely going to have a holiday party this year!
We are happy to recommend Jim. And Pepper, our dog, misses him. If I were doing another big job I would call Jim.” – Bryan & Bernadette
